Hon. Judge John AllenJudge John R. Allen was appointed to the District Court bench by Governor Ivey on February 27, 2025.  He obtained his undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University in 1999 and graduated with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in 2002.  After law school, he was honored to clerk for United States District Court Judge Paul Brown of the Eastern District of Texas. 

Following his two year clerkship, Judge Allen practiced complex commercial litigation in Dallas, Texas at the international law firm of Baker Botts.  He later worked for Balch and Bingham in Birmingham, Alabama, doing corporate work and mergers and acquisitions.  In 2010, he opened his own general practice law firm in Huntsville, Alabama, focusing on criminal and juvenile litigation.

Before taking the bench, Judge Allen served the community in a variety of ways. He served as legal counsel for the Madison County Republican Party Executive Committee, a member of the Indigent Defense Advisory Board for the 23rd Judicial Circuit, a member of the Nominating Committee of the Huntsville Bar Association, co-founder and President of the Huntsville Chapter of the Federalist Society, Secretary of the Madison County Republican Men’s Club, and co-chair of the Criminal Defense Section of the Huntsville Bar Association.

He has been married to his wife, Ashley Howard Allen, a Huntsville native, since 2009.  They have three children and are members of Whitesburg Baptist Church.
