Judge Ronald Smith is a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and has been a resident of Madison County for the past 22 years. He received a B.S. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 1998 with a major in Justice Sciences and a minor in Spanish. Judge Smith received his Juris Doctorate in 2000 from the University of Alabama School of Law.
Judge Smith served as assistant District Attorney for Madison County from 2001 to 2003. He was in the private practice of law for over 20 years, practicing in the areas of civil litigation, criminal defense, domestic relations and child-welfare law. As a practicing attorney, Judge Smith was a member of the Huntsville Madison County Bar Association where he served previously as secretary. Judge Smith received both merit and president’s awards from the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association for which he served on the Board of Directors and was named President in 2020.
Judge Smith was appointed as District Judge in May of 2023 by Governor Kay Ivey.
Judge Smith has been married to his wife Lydia, for 21 years and they have 4 children.
