Coats is a native of Birmingham, Alabama, and has been a resident of Madison County for the past 29 years. She received a B.A. from the University of Alabama Huntsville in 1988 with majors in Political Science and Accounting, and a minor in English. She is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honorary Society, and Sigma Tau Delta English Honorary Society.<span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While at UAH, she served as President of the UAH Political Science Club.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Judge Coats received her Juris Doctorate in 1991 from the University of <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Alabama School of Law.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Judge Coats is also a graduate of the National Criminal Defense College located at the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Judge Coats was an assistant District Attorney for Madison County in 1992.\u00a0 She was in the private practice of law for over 21 years, practicing in the areas of criminal defense, domestic relations and child welfare law. \u00a0During her tenure as a private attorney, she was also contract counsel for the Alabama Attorney General\u2019s Office representing the Department of Human Resources.\u00a0 Judge Coats has served on the Executive Committee of the Madison County Bar Association, and she also served as President of the Madison County Bar Association-Young Lawyers Division.\u00a0 In 1999, Judge Coats was appointed as a Special District Court Judge.\u00a0 In 2000, Judge Coats received the Humanitarian Services Award from Crisis Services of North Alabama for her legal work and dedication to domestic violence victims. In 2005, 2006, 2011, 2012 Judge Coats received the President\u2019s Award from the Alabama Criminal Defense Attorney\u2019s Association for outstanding contributions to criminal defense.\u00a0 She also served as District Vice President of the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association from 2007-2012.\u00a0 She served as Treasurer of the Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association from 2012-2013.\u00a0 Judge Coats is a member of the Alabama District Judges Association, the Alabama Juvenile Judges Association, the Alabama State Bar, and the Madison County Bar Association.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Coats has served on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Alabama, Downtown Rescue Mission, Alabama Federation of Republican Women, Huntsville\u2019s Twickenham Republican Women, and Alabama Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.\u00a0 Judge Coats was elected to the Madison County Republican Executive Committee in the 2006 and 2010 Republican Primaries.\u00a0 She was elected as District Judge in November 2012 and is currently serving a six year term.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Coats is also active in the community as a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll, SOS Beagle Rescue of Alabama, the Heritage Quilters of Huntsville, the Junior League of Huntsville and Whitesburg Baptist Church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hon.
